Dr Rentia Fourie graduated from the medical school of The University of Pretoria in 2008. After completing her internship and community service in South Africa, she worked as a General Practitioner in Pretoria. She started her specialist training in 2012 at the University of the Free State and was mainly trained in Bloemfontein, but also spent time working in Kimberley in the Northern Cape. She completed five years of training in CardioThoracic Surgery and graduated in 2017 with a Magister’s degree in Medicine (CardioThoracic Surgery). She was admitted to the College of CardioThoracic Surgeons of South Africa after completing her FC Cardio (SA) examination in 2017. She has been involved in several research projects and presents at national and international conferences regularly. She was awarded the best presentation at the South African Thoracic Society congress in 2017. In 2018 she started working as a medical specialist at Steve Biko Academic Hospital. She focused on adult cardiac surgery and was the head of the CardioThoracic Intensive Care Unit. She was also appointed by the University of Pretoria as a lecturer and consultant in CardioThoracic Surgery. She is still working in that position managing the adult cardiac surgery program and concentrating on registrar training. She is also developing a minimally invasive cardiac surgery training program to be part of the curriculum of CardioThoracic Surgery registrar training. She is also consulting on medico-legal cases and writing medico-legal reports. Dr Fourie has a keen interest in bioethics and in 2023 enrolled for a MSc in Bioethics and Health law at the University of the Witwatersrand.
