Practical Workshop 2: Psychological consequences, emotional shock and Constitutional damage


This workshop is one of the workshops in a series of practical workshops in medico-legal practice designed by Faculty of SAMLA and accredited by UCT.

This workshop comprises six lectures that address:

  • what it is like to be a claimant,
  • whether the law and practice of personal injury litigation is consistent with the Constitution of South Africa;
  • the quantification of a personal injury claim;
  • whether law and practice are outdated with regard to psychological harm;
  • and a golden thread lecture which  examines ethical perspectives on the role of expert witnesses in assisting Honourable Judges in the compensation of persons affected by psychological consequences of accidents or Constitutional damages.
