Free workshop via Microsoft Teams

Join SAMLA for a free workshop on the South African Law Reform Commission’s recently released Report on Medico-Legal Claims (Project 141).

Professor Henry Lerm, adjunct Professor in Criminal and Procedural Law at Nelson Mandela University and an Honorary Member of SAMLA who chairs Education and Training will co-present the workshop with Dr Trevor Frankish, a specialist in family medicine, a mediator and SAMLA Honorary Member.

The report proposes significant changes to how the state manages medico-legal claims. What might these mean for patients, healthcare providers, legal practitioners and government?

The discussion will explore:

• Proposed reforms to the management of medico-legal claims against the state

• Two draft Bills on compensation and medico-legal litigation

• Practical measures to improve claims management, reduce litigation risks and strengthen healthcare governance

• Court judgments that informed the Commission’s recommendations

• The proposals’ potential effects across the health and legal sectors

Join us for a clear, practical discussion of the report and the future of medico-legal law reform in South Africa.
