Michiel is an admitted attorney and the managing director of Bouwer & Olivier Inc in Randburg, Johannesburg. He is also a trained and accredited mediator and currently serves (as vice-chairperson) on the Exco of Mediation In Motion Mediators NPO (MiMM). He is actively involved in various initiatives promoting the wider adoption of mediation as a dispute resolution mechanism - particularly in the medico-legal space. Over time his practice as an attorney has shifted towards corporate and commercial law after initially having extensive exposure to personal injury claims founded both in medical negligence and the statutory liability of the Road Accident Fund. His journey went full circle when he trained as a mediator and honed his skills as such by actively taking part in SAMLA's mediation pilot projects with the Gauteng Department of Health as well as the RAF mediation initiatives. Michiel is not only proficient and highly specialised in law but also pays attention to detail and has, through his mediation practice, developed a sensitivity to the effect conflict has on human dignity. He believes mediation has the potential of revolutionising the legal industry and hopes for it to become the go-to mechanism for conflict resolution.
