Practical Workshop 3: RAF 4 Assessment and recommendations


This is one of 10 workshops presented by SAMLA. It is accredited by UCT. CPD points are available.

 

This workshop comprises 15 lectures that address practical and theoretical as well as critical consideration of the assessment of individuals who have sustained injuries in motor vehicle accidents affecting pedestrians, drivers or passengers and who assessed for the purposes of the establishment of the degree of injury in claims lodged with the Road Accident Fund in South Africa.

This workshop addresses:

  • the legal framework of RAF4 serious injury assessment;
  • the strengths and shortcomings of WPI rating;
  • the experience and perspective of a general practitioner and appeal Tribunal member;
  • psychological damages;
  • an attorney's experience in practice;
  • experience and perspective of an orthopaedic surgeon; expert witness and appeal Tribunal chairperson;
  • the narrative test;
  • disability assessment;
  • losses of work capacity, amenities and enjoyment of life;
  • a golden thread lecture on post-modernism in medico-legal practice;
  • a golden thread lecture on observational/research scientific reasoning;
  • how to be a credible and valuable expert;
  • special considerations.

Although this workshop specifically addresses the completion of the assessment of the severity of injury, the principles involved are applicable to all professionals involved in the medico-legal sphere.
