Gerrit was born in Stellenbosch and grew up in Bellville where he matriculated at the D.F. Malan High School in 1985. During his national service he became an officer in the SANDF. After graduating from the University of Stellenbosch he completed his articles at Marais Muller in Cape Town and became professional assistant at M.B. Curle & Pienaar in Somerset West, before joining Van der Spuy & Partners in 1997.
